Monument is a collection of images which explores the changing ways in which people use the landscape around them for irreverent, commemorative and utilitarian purposes.
The images have been selected as all carrying significant contemporary significance yet none of which are not being celebrated in line with their originally intended purpose. Some have been identified as ‘monuments’ by the dictionary definition for centuries, others only more recently (and then only by a specific group of people and for very diverse reasons).
Through this juxtaposition of meaning found within contemporary and traditional structures within the landscape, the work aims to raise questions about the evolving roles of these ‘monuments’ within our society. Does this evolution dishonour the original purpose? Or does it ensure their enduring relevance?
